Beyond the Whistle is a practical playbook for the competitor figuring out who they are once the structure, recognition, and identity tied to the game begin to fade.
A guide for athletes navigating the transition beyond competition.
What happens when the schedule disappears, the recognition fades, and the identity you built around competition has to evolve?
This is the story behind the book — and the transition that inspired a practical framework for what comes next.
Carrington E. Vaughn, a Pittsburgh native, former University of Arizona football letter winner, and sports and entertainment attorney, today releases Beyond the Whistle: A Playbook for a Fulfilling Life After Sports. The book confronts a question every athlete eventually faces but few are prepared for: who are you without the game?
The game ends for everyone. For most athletes it ends long before they expect it, and it takes with it the structure, community, and scoreboard that defined who they were. Vaughn lived that transition himself. A walk-on who earned a scholarship under head coach Rich Rodriguez, he tore his ACL and meniscus on a routine play two weeks later, ending his career at Arizona. He moved from a Pac-12 locker room to law school and a legal career. He wrote Beyond the Whistle as the guide he wishes he had.
At the center of the book is the RESET framework, a five-step playbook for the next chapter:
"This isn't about starting over," Vaughn says. "It's about taking the discipline, resilience, and drive the game built in you and using it to build what's next. You choose the arena. You define the scoreboard. You decide what winning looks like."
Vaughn's own path began in Fox Chapel, where he played pee wee football for the Shaler Cubs and Guyasuta before going all the way to the Arizona Wildcats, where he walked on as a linebacker and earned a scholarship. After his playing career, he earned his Juris Doctor from the James E. Rogers College of Law, where he served as president of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society. He now works as a sports and entertainment immigration attorney at a Los Angeles-based firm and is an entrepreneur. He now mentors athletes through the identity shift he once navigated on his own.
Beyond the Whistle is written for athletes at every level — high school, college, and professional — as well as the parents, coaches, and athletic departments who support them.
A practical guide built on the RESET framework: Rebuild Structure, Expand Identity, Shift Success, Execute the Next Move, Thrive Beyond the Game.
For the athlete who still has ambition and drive but no clear place to direct it. 123 pages, five chapters, five practices.
The physical playbook. Same five chapters, built to be marked up, dog-eared, and handed to someone who needs it.
A community and resource hub for competitors moving through every stage of life after sport. Structured reflection, shared standards, and people who are running the same race.
You don't have to figure out the next arena alone.
